Radiological safety issues discussed in Fukushima

The meeting of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) was held this summer in Fukushima, Japan. The work group was represented by specialists from the United States of America, Great Britain, France, Spain, etc. Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Victor Averin was a representative expert from Belarus.

During the meeting they discussed the most significant issues, concerning different aspects of emergency preparedness and response planning in case of nuclear power plant accidents, improvement of international regulation documents and analysis of the main achievements in the field of radiological safety.

- We had to focus on the most relevant objects concerning the return of evacuees to their former places of living, low market competitive ability of food products from the radioactive contaminated areas, - Professor Averin stated.

The experts from the international commission discussed the issues of utilization of the radioactive wastes, psychological health of the affected communities and negative influence of stress to human health.
