Undergraduate and Master’s degree students from Germany were gathered at Gomel State University International Summer Ecology School that was opened on September 4. The opening ceremony started with a welcome speech from Rector Sergei A. Khakhomov. During his presentation about University our guests could trace its history and traditions, our graduates’ achievements, vast international cooperation between GSU and higher education institutions from other countries. “Two weeks’ programme of Summer School includes an effective combination of theory and practice”, Rector stated. “We hope that you will get a full foretaste of the course terms of reference, spend quality time and boost your positive emotions during communication with our citizens”. Several major subjects were targeted in the course of Summer School opening: Chernobyl nuclear disaster site remediation and results of the analysis performed after protective and adaptation efforts. According to Project coordinator, the Head of International Affairs department Alexander Grahotsky, the tight schedule would leave no one bored: “A variety of lectures, research and practice seminars, round-table conferences, presentations and discussions intersperse with visits to enterprises and organizations of Gomel region. Summer School project also includes tours to Polesie State Radiation Ecological Reserve, Belovezhskaya Pushcha and sightseeing of the region”. International Summer School at our University was organized in co-operation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) that works with GSU over a period of 10 years.
