Working meeting of the 8th General Assembly of European Network NERIS which was held in Lisbon (Portugal) on May 15-19 was dedicated to development of system of protection and informing population in the sphere of radiation safety, its diversified preparedness to emergencies related to atomic power stations accidents. About two hundred representatives of European countries participated in the meeting. Dean of the Faculty of Biology, professor V.S.Averin acted as an expert from CIS countries. In his reports during seminar «ALARA and its role in emergencies» he shared his practical experience of implementation of security measures which were undertook in Belarus after the Chernobyl atomic power station disaster. «Awareness of population in the sphere of radiation safety is a global challenge under the conditions of rapidly developing atomic energy», V.S.Averin states. «Coordinated and organized activities is of a world-wide concern nowadays». As the expert states, the participants of NERIS project consider control of safety exploitation of an atomic power station, development of emergency plans and effective methods of operative reaction in case of nuclear and radiation emergencies as issues of primary importance. The abovementioned methods embrace modern approaches to system of protecting of population from ion radiation, issues of evacuation of citizens of the affected areas, psychological training preventing panic, development of algorithms of activities in emergency situations, etc. «Skills and experience acquired in the sphere of nuclear and radiation safety must be accumulated, improved and transmitted to next generations. It depends much on cooperation between states. Global community shouldn`t ignore the challenges which may concern everyone», - states the speaker.
