About The faculty traces its history from 1944 when the first training of historians began. At that time the faculty of History was created. In 1956 the training of historians was stopped. In 1969 Gomel teacher’s college was transformed into the Gomel state university, the department of History had been created, and the training of historians had been renewed. In 1988 the department became an independent faculty. On the basis of the faculty, the department of Law was created in 1991. In 1992 the faculty was renamed into the faculty of History and Law, and in July 1998 it was separated into two independent faculties: the faculty of History and the faculty of Law. In 2004 the department of Philosophy was included into the faculty structure. The faculty comprises four departments: the Department of Belarus History, the Department of World History, the Department of Slavs History and Special Historical Disciplines, the Department of Philosophy. The Department of Belarus History was founded in 1992, employs 12 teachers including 7 associate professors, 2 senior teachers, 3 assistants. Specialization: Modern history of Belarus. Head of the chair: Ph.D., associate professor Aksana Yashchanka. The Department of World History was founded in 1984. There are 9 teachers including 1 professor, 5 associate professors, 3 assistants. Specialization: Modern history of foreign countries. Head of the chair: Ph.D., associate professor Staniislav Charopka. The Department of Slavs History and Special Historical Disciplines was founded in 1984. There are 8 teachers including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, 2 senior teachers and 1 assistant. Specialization: The history of the Slavic countries. Head of the chair: Ph.D., associate professor Gennady Alyaksejchanka. The Department of Philosophy was founded in 1975. There are 8 teachers including 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 1 senior teacher, 3 assistants. Head of the chair: Ph.D., associate professor Valentina Stepaniuk. Teaching and educational process is conducted by 37 staff teachers, three of them are the doctors of science, 20 are the candidates of science, 307 students and 15 MA students are being trained. The basic education of the teachers corresponds to the discipline being taught. The faculty carries out training in three basic specialities: «History (National and World)», «Museum Studies and Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage (areas)», «History. English language» (last admission was in 2012). Graduates of two profiles are trained within the speciality «Museum Studies and Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage (areas)». The first area is «Museum Studies and Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage (History and Museology)» with qualification «Historian-Museologist. Teacher». The second is «Museum Studies and Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage (Cultural Heritage and Tourism)» with qualification «Manager in Cultural Heritage and Tourism». 3000 students have been trained at the faculty since its existence. Graduates can obtain a job in sphere of education, in museums, archives, high schools, research institutes, public organizations and enterprise structures. Many students carry out research work under the supervision of highly skilled teachers in the fields of archeology, ethnography, history of Gomel region, political parties and movements of Belarus, contemporary history of Germany and Poland, problems of the humanization of social relations, the place of the youth in modern society. Active research work is carried out within students’ research laboratories, which are four at the faculty. It is no coincidence that every third student of the faculty – is an active participant of SRWS. Students’ research work promotes development of their professional qualities. A lot of attention is given to practical training of the students. The faculty holds pedagogical, archeological and ethnographic, museum (introductory), museum (sightseeing and archival), heuristic (searching) and managerial practices. They are held at the premises of schools, gymnasiums, libraries, Gomel museums, state archives of the Gomel region, computer labs of the university, tourist enterprises. Archeological practice is held in field conditions. Since 2005 the faculty provides training for an MA degree in two specialities «National History» and «World History». Students of the faculty take active part in social, cultural and sport life of the university. They are participants of various artistic circles, sport sections and social organizations.

Mezga) The key research issues of the department are the military history of the XVIII – XX centuries, the reflection of geopolitical processes of the XX century in the conscience of the region’s population. The Department of Slavs? Alekseychenko) The teaching staff study the processes of city formation, the connections between cities and country districts in the Middle Ages, the formation and functioning of municipal government in the XIX – early XX centuries.
