The history of the biological faculty dates back to 1930 when the natural sciences faculty was opened in the Pedagogical institute. More than 6500 highly qualified specialists have finished the faculty for the last 75 years. They have multipurpose education and work successfully in the field of national education and in the various branches of the national economy of the Republic of Belarus.
The faculty staff is:
- 2 associate member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus;
- 4 doctors of sciences;
- 33 candidates of sciences;
- 7 senior teachers;
- 11 assistants;
- 21 laboratory assistants.
The scientific work at the biological faculty is carried out on the basis of the teacher unification into author teams. It gives an opportunity to focus the scientists’ efforts on various research fields.
The main fields of scientific research:
- structural and functional plant community state in the south-east part of the Republic of Belarus;
- anthropogenic transformation and ecosystem management problems;
- radio-ecological monitoring;
- technogenic toxicants migration in the environment;
- the urban environment phytoindication;
- soil phycology, lichenology and bryology;
- scientific basis development for the protection and sustainable use of terrestrial, soil and water ecosystems biodiversity, evaluation of Polesie landscape sustainability;
- polymer chemistry;
- structural and functional features of growth, nature and directivity of forest forming processes an integrated productivity of mixed plantings with a view to develop regulatory documents on the formation by selling an intermediate use of sustainable highly productive economically viable plantings.
- fundamental and applied aspects of mushrooms industrial cultivation in order to scientifically substantiate modern biotechnologies of fruiting bodies and edible and medicine mushrooms sown mycelium production and to imbed these biotechnologies in the agroindustrial complex forms and forestry of the republic.
Two scientific schools were created and they have been developed successfully:
- Professor L. Sapegin’s school, the activity of which is developed to the study of meadow plant communities, structure and productivity;
- Professor G. Goncharenko’s school studying population and generic resources of forests of the Republic of Belarus.
The faculty is carried out training of students of the second stage of higher education for the specialty “Biology” and several forestry specialties.
The council K02.12.05 for PhD theses for specialty “Ecology” works out the biological faculty.
The students of the biological faculty are trained in two specialties:
1-131 03 01 02 “Biology” (direction – scientific and teaching activity). Qualification: Biologist. A teacher of biology and chemistry. Course of study: 4 years for students of day-time training, 5 years for students of extra-mural faculty. The specialist is intended for working in all types of secondary and secondary special education establishments as a teacher of biology and chemistry, in scientific and research, scientific and production, production establishments and enterprises of all forms of ownership, reserves, botanical and zoological gardens, history museums, biological stations and centers.
Magistracy:
Course of study:
day-time – 1 year,
correspondence: one year and a half
1-31 80 01 Biology Master of Biological sciences
1-75 01 01 ”Forestry” Qualification: Forestry Engineer. Course of study: 4 years and a half for day-time students; 5 years and a half for students of extra-mural faculty. The specialist is intended for working at forestry enterprises, forest inventory enterprises and certification departments, scientific and research, production and sales and educational establishments, national parks and reserves, forest hunting farms and forest side secondary use enterprises. Branches of forestry disciplines department are opened on the basis of the Republican forest management unitary design enterprise “Gomellesoproekt” and on the basis of the State Scientific Institution "Institute of Forest of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus".

1-75 80 02 – Forest management and forest taxation Master of Agricultural Sciences
1-75 80 03 – Dendrology and forestry, forest fires and struggle against them Master of Agricultural Sciences
There are 5 volunteer groups at the faculty. The volunteer group members help war and labour veterans, orphaned children in the orphanage, they are engaged in the territories greening. They protect homeless animals. There are various sport clubs at the faculty – volleyball, football groups and gyms. Our students also take part in the work of two students’ theatre studios, various dance and vocal groups.
